The Hamburger SV football team has already celebrated a century of existence, having been founded in 1919. The Hamburg club played in the first league throughout its existence until 2018, when they were relegated to the second highest competition. Until their relegation, they were the only team to have played in the first league continuously since their foundation. For their home matches, the Volksparkstadion with a capacity of 57,000 spectators serves them.

They are a regular in the Bundesliga, having only had a few brief periods in their history when they did not play in the top competition. In recent years, they have been a team of the first tier of the overall table, the best in this respect was in the 2014/2015 edition, when their performance was enough to win the overall bronze.
