US Sassuolo Calcio

The club's nickname is I Neroverdi (the black and green), which makes it obvious what colour combination you will find on their jerseys and in their emblem. They play in a relatively new stadium built in 1995 and currently called Mapei Stadium - Città del Tricolore. It seats 21 584 fans.

Origins of the club and its performance in amateur competitions

The club was founded in 1920 in the city of Sassuolo. It spent most of its history in the amateur divisions, until 1968, when it was promoted to the lower competition, Serie D, for the first time. At that time it merged with two other local football teams, namely Football Club Sassuolo Sportiva and San Giorgio Sassuolo. In 1974, Unione Sportiva Sassuolo Calcio as we know it today was formed.

Rise in professional football and first matches won

In 1984 came the first promotion to Serie C2, the lowest level in Italian professional football. However, in 1990 came the drop to Serie D again. Second place in 1998 then secured them promotion to Serie C2 again. Further promotion then followed via Serie C1 in 2006 and a quick promotion to Serie B in 2008. Since the 2013/14 season, the club has been playing in Serie A, the top league competition. Here they are still in the second half of the first league table.

However, in the 2015/16 season they finished the best so far, in 6th place. Among other things, this earned them their first ever participation in the UEFA Europa League qualifiers. They finally managed to qualify for the group stage, beating Crvena zvezda Belgrade 4-1 on aggregate in the play-offs.

Coming back to the league competition, the club's first ever win in Serie A was on 20 October 2013 against Club Bologna, whom they beat 2-1 at home. The goals were scored by Domenico Berardi and Antonio Floro Flores. With this win, the club moved up from the bottom of the first league table. The first away game they won was against Sampdoria on 3 November, where Domenico Berardi scored his first hat-trick to lead them to a 4-3 win.
