RCD Espanyol

The full name of this club, Reial Club Deportiu Espanyol de Barcelona, translates to Royal Spanish Sports Club Barcelona. The nicknames are Periquitos, Blanquiazules (white and blue) and Mágico (magical). On the home jerseys, we thus naturally find the white and blue colours, which are projected in wide vertical stripes. The club plays at the RCDE stadium, which is also known as Estadi Cornellà-El Prat. It has a capacity of 40,500 seats and is a modern stadium that opened in 2009.

Derby with big brother

In the case of this club, the rivalry is right on offer as it has the legendary FC Barcelona as a neighbour. At the beginning of the 20th century, when dictator Miguel Primo de Rivera ruled, Barcelona was considered part of the Catalan identity, with Espanyol more likely to play into the hands of the regime of the time. The derby that the two clubs play together is called El derby Barcelonaí and it can be said that it has always had a higher importance, especially for Espanyol fans. This is, of course, because the two clubs are somewhat different in terms of results and Barcelona, as one of the leading big clubs, has different objectives than Espanyol.

Milestones and club achievements

The club was founded in 1900 in the Catalan capital of Barcelona. The club was founded by a student of the local engineering university. Since 1910, the club has borne the name Club Deportiu Espanyol, while also abandoning the original yellow jerseys to play in the current colours. Later, the club added "Reial" to its name, which means royal. This was after the addition of a crown to the club's emblem.

Among the club's greatest achievements are the four Copa del Rey Cup victories. It won them consecutively in 1929, 1940, 2000 and 2006. In addition, the club has also reached the final of the UEFA Cup, the current Europa League, twice, appearing in the 1987/88 and 2006/07 seasons, so it has also managed to get a feel for the European Cup environment.
