SD Eibar

The full name of the club is Sociedad Deportiva Eibar, S.A.D and the club nicknames are Armagiñak, Los Armeros and Azulgranas (blue and crimson). You can also easily tell that the club colours are blue and bright red. You can find them both on the home jerseys and in the emblem. The club's home is at the small Ipurua Municipal Stadium, which has a capacity of 7,083 seats.

Milestones and club achievements

The founding of this club dates back to 1940, and it is based in the smaller Basque city of Eibar. Its creation was made possible by the merger of a pair of clubs, Deportivo Gallo and Union Deportiva Eibarresa. In its early days, the club was a lowly club, even playing in the fifth division. Since the late 1980s, however, it has played in the Segunda División, the second highest competition, where it first broke through in the 1952/53 season. This time, however, it managed to stay there for a longer period, consecutively from the 1988/89 season to 2005/06. This was followed by a weaker season and relegation to the third division.

In the 2013/14 season, however, they made historic breakthrough and got the chance to showcase their performances in La Liga. And starting with the 2014/15 season, they are still playing it today. It is mainly at the tail of the table, but in the 2017/18 season the club managed to climb up to 9th place, which is its best position so far. Promotion to Spain's top league competition, La Liga, is the club's biggest achievement so far. It has no more significant achievements so far.

Lack of capital and stadium exemption

However, the historic entry into La Liga has not been without its problems. The club did not have sufficient capital. However, it was able to counter this with the Defiende al Eibar campaign, which can be translated as 'let's mine Eibar'. This campaign brought funds to the club through a fundraising campaign on Facebook and Twitter. The collection was also financially supported by players who previously played for the club. These were names such as David Silva and Xabi Alonso. In the end, the club still had to get an exemption for stadium capacity, as the requirement for a first league stadium is 15,000 seats, while the club's stadium doesn't even have half that.
