Everton Aims to End Losing Streak in Away Clash Against In-Form Sunderland

02.11.2025

Everton will attempt to recover from two consecutive defeats when they travel to the northeast of England on Monday evening to face an in-form Sunderland. David Moyes’s team conceded five unanswered goals in matches against Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur and lost two games in a row for the first time this season.

Under Moyes, Everton last suffered three consecutive competitive losses in October 2011. The Scottish coach now faces the task of halting this negative run against an opponent in excellent form. Newly promoted Sunderland sits fourth after nine rounds with five victories and recently achieved a valuable 2–1 win over Chelsea. Meanwhile, Everton has dropped to fourteenth place with eleven points.

The match will carry special significance for David Moyes and goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, both of whom share a past with the club from the Stadium of Light. For both, it will be a return to familiar surroundings. The teams are meeting for the first time since the 2016/17 season, with Everton having won only twice in their last eight visits to this stadium.

Everton will be without defenders Jarrad Branthwaite and Nathan Patterson. Branthwaite underwent surgery on a hamstring injury and faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines, while Patterson had a minor groin procedure and will not be available.

The expected starting lineup for Everton includes Jordan Pickford, Jake O’Brien, James Tarkowski, Michael Keane, Vitaliy Mykolenko, Idrissa Gueye, James Garner, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Iliman Ndiaye, Thierno Barry and Jack Grealish.

Sunderland’s recent record stands at W-W-L-W-D, while Everton’s is L-L-W-D-L. The match between Sunderland and Everton will kick off on Monday, November 3, at 8:00 p.m. UK time at the Stadium of Light.
