Erling Haaland scored twice as Manchester City ended Bournemouth’s eight match unbeaten run at the Etihad Stadium. The Norwegian forward found the net in both halves after passes from Rayan Cherki, while the visitors replied only once through Tyler Adams. The first half offered an attacking spectacle in which both teams played open football.
After the break the match became more cautious, but Nico O’Reilly confirmed the home side’s deserved win with his first goal of the season. His precise left footed strike from the edge of the penalty area set the final score at 3:1.
Haaland and Cherki continue to form an increasingly strong partnership. The French midfielder shows a natural instinct for attacking play and is constantly involved in combinations, while Haaland makes perfect use of his passes behind the defense. After Kevin De Bruyne’s departure the team was looking for a new playmaker and Cherki has taken on this role with great confidence.
Guardiola’s tactic with narrower wingers proves ideal for the current squad. Players such as Foden or Doku are effective in spaces between the lines where they can both create and finish. On the flanks the attack is supported by offensively minded full backs O’Reilly and Ait Nouri.
Criticism directed at Savinho after the match is not unfounded but should not overshadow the team’s overall strong performance. The young Brazilian lost possession several times yet still shows potential to grow under Guardiola’s guidance. In the context of this victory City deserve recognition for their collective effort and return to winning form.
