Roberto Firmino’s Move from Liverpool: A Choice Between Certainty and Prestige

07.11.2025

When Roberto Firmino’s contract with Liverpool expired in the summer of 2023, the Brazilian forward decided to move to the Saudi league, signing with Al Ahli. He made this decision despite reported interest from Real Madrid.

The main reason for his choice was stability. Al Ahli offered him a clear and financially attractive contract, while Real Madrid expressed interest but asked him to wait until their transfer plans became clearer.

Firmino’s agent informed him that Madrid’s interest was genuine, yet he was not their first option. This meant he would have had to wait to see whether the club pursued another target. The Brazilian striker therefore accepted the offer from Saudi Arabia, which provided him with security and a new challenge.

However, his performance on the pitch did not meet expectations. Early in the season, he was left out of the squad for the Asian Champions League, and his time at Al Ahli failed to deliver the anticipated results. The following summer, he moved to Qatar’s Al Sadd, seeking to revive his career.

Firmino’s story illustrates how complex transfer decisions can be even for experienced players. The choice between a prestigious European club and the certainty of a different environment ultimately shaped the next stage of his football journey.
