Atlético Madrid Begins a New Chapter with Majority Investment from Apollo Global Management

10.11.2025

Atlético Madrid is entering a new era as the club officially confirmed that the American investment firm Apollo Global Management, through its sports division Apollo Sports Capital, will take majority ownership of the Madrid team. The completion of the transaction is expected in the first quarter of 2026.

Longtime CEO Miguel Ángel Gil stated that the club welcomes a new partner who respects Atlético’s history and traditions while bringing financial strength for further growth. The goal is to maintain the team’s competitiveness on the European stage.

Apollo representative Robert Givone emphasized that the company values Atlético’s more than century-old legacy and aims to support both sporting development and the local community. Gil and president Enrique Cerezo will remain in the club’s management even after the ownership structure changes.

According to the newspaper Expansión, Apollo will acquire 55 percent of the club’s shares, with the club valued at 2.5 billion euros. The Quantum Pacific group will hold 25 percent, Gil 10 percent, Ares Management 5 percent, and Cerezo three percent. The remaining shares will go to smaller investors.

The new majority owner plans significant financial investments to strengthen the squad and infrastructure. The completion of the modern Ciudad del Deporte sports complex is expected in 2027. These changes should ensure the club’s long-term stability and increase its chances of winning trophies, including the coveted Champions League.

The future of coach Diego Simeone remains open. The Argentine manager has a contract until 2027, and continued cooperation with Gil could lead to an extension depending on the team’s results and his own decision.
