Goalkeeper Jan Oblak is returning early from Slovenia’s national team camp to Madrid because of an injury sustained during a World Cup qualifying match. His participation in Atlético Madrid’s upcoming games is now uncertain.
Oblak played the entire qualifier against Kosovo, which Slovenia lost 0:2. Coach Matjaž Kek stated after the match that the goalkeeper had been experiencing physical problems for some time, which have now worsened. As a result, he will miss the final qualifier against Sweden.
According to the Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo, Oblak might be ready to play in the league match against Getafe. Other media outlets are more cautious and note that his condition will be assessed after medical examinations upon his return to Madrid.
The Slovenian goalkeeper has played every competitive match for Atlético this season and remains one of the key players under Diego Simeone. Although his performances have not always been flawless, he has saved valuable points for the team on several occasions. With more than five hundred matches for the club, he is the second most-used player in Atlético’s history.
Given Atlético’s cautious approach to injury management, it is expected that if Oblak is not fully fit, substitute Juan Musso will get the opportunity in the match against Getafe. The club does not want to risk aggravating the captain’s condition ahead of the crucial Champions League clash with Inter Milan.
