Barcelona president Joan Laporta said he was not surprised by former coach Xavi Hernández’s decision to support Victor Font ahead of the club’s upcoming presidential elections. According to Laporta, Xavi has the right to make his own choice, and his stance is understandable given their past relationship.
Xavi appeared at a public event alongside Victor Font on Monday, drawing attention from fans and media. Laporta emphasized that he did not feel affected by this and that every Barcelona supporter is free to act according to personal conviction. He also noted that the election campaign has not officially begun and therefore prefers not to comment on every statement.
Laporta explained that his earlier remarks about so-called know-it-alls were not directed at specific individuals. He described them as a warning to those who see the club purely as a business entity. He added, with a smile, that anyone who felt targeted might have their reasons.
The president also revealed that the election date has not yet been set but is expected to fall between March 15 and June 15. The management’s goal is to ensure that the elections have minimal impact on the sporting side of the season so the team can continue its work undisturbed.
The tension between Laporta and Xavi thus remains a matter of differing opinions rather than open conflict. The club’s leadership is currently focused on maintaining team stability, while supporters are already looking ahead to the changes the spring elections may bring.
