The German football club uses blue and white as its team colours. Their sanctuary is the multi-purpose stadium Merck-Stadion am Böllenfalltor, which has a capacity of 17,400 people. The club was founded in 1898 in Darmstadt in the Federal Republic of Hesse.

The home stadium is the Arena AufSchalke, currently known as the Ventils-Arena for sponsorship reasons. It is a modern arena opened in 2001 and has a capacity of 62,271 seats for league matches.
