The Tuscany club has a tradition dating back to 1920 and has changed its name several times throughout its history. From the original Empoli FBC it gradually became ASF Empoli, Dopolavoro Empolese to today's Empoli FC. The Azzurri, as the team playing its home games at Stadio Carlo Castellani (capacity of more than 16,000 spectators) is also nicknamed, even played in the UEFA Cup in 2007. However, the vast majority of their time was spent in Italy's third highest competition. They are at home in the Sardegna Arena, which provides 16,233 seats. Meanwhile, this is the temporary home of the club, which was originally at the Stadio Sant'Elia. However, it has been partially demolished with the intention of building a new stadium, which is scheduled for completion in 2021.
