The club's nickname is Die Geißböcke, which refers to the club's mascot, a goat named Hennes. The mascot is named after a former player and later manager of the football club, Hennes Weisweiler. The club colours are red and white. The club plays its matches at the Müngersdorfer Stadion, which is known as the RheinEnergieStadion for sponsorship reasons. It has a capacity of 49,698 for league matches.

The main rivals are Borussia Mönchengladbach, Bayer Leverkusen and Fortuna Düsseldorf. All these clubs have a local rivalry between them, as they are located in the same region of the Ruhr area.

Milestones and club successes

This club has only been writing its history since 1948. However, the merger of two traditional clubs, Kölner BC 01 (founded in 1901) and SpVgg Sülz 07 (founded in 1907), contributed to its formation. The club is based in Cologne, which is located in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia.

During its existence, the club has won three titles in the top competition. The first was in the 1961/62 season, just before the Bundesliga was formed. The Bundesliga was then played from the very beginning in the 1963/64 season, when the club also immediately won its first Bundesliga title. The second one came in the 1977/78 season. The 21st century has generally been all about ups and downs for the club, but no major success has come so far.

The club has also scored points in cups in the past, namely in the DFB-Pokal, which it won 4 times. Its last victory dates back to the 1982/83 season. On European soil, it reached the final of the UEFA Cup, now the UEFA Europa League, in the 1985/86 season.
