Their nickname is Die Eisernen and their club colours are red and white. The official club song is "Eisern Union" by German punk singer Nina Hagen. They play their home games at Stadion An der Alten Försterei, which has a capacity of 22,012 spectators for football matches. It was opened in 1920 and is also used for concerts.

Milestones and club achievements

The football club was founded in 1966 and is based in the Berlin borough of Treptow-Köpenick. The date of foundation is not as ancient as some other clubs, but its predecessor was FC Olympia 06 Oberschöneweide, which was founded in 1906. Since then there have been many name changes or dissolution after World War II. This is typical of German clubs in the inter-war and post-war period.

However, the history of the current FC Union Berlin dates back to 1966, and it was not until the 2019/20 season that it first won its Bundesliga season. So far, of its successes at a higher level of football, it reached the final of the DFB-Pokal Cup in 2001.

Dedicated fans

The club is a traditional one, emerging from the former working class, with many fan activities. In earlier times, it was known for its rivalry with local rival Dynamo Berlin, which was linked to the East German secret service, the Stasi. Union Berlin thus played a kind of oppositional role against the authorities of the communist regime.

The club was in financial trouble several times, for example in 2004. At that time it was necessary to secure a licence for the fourth division. The funds were raised in the "Bleed for the Union" campaign. It was not a metaphor, but fans donated blood to Berlin hospitals to raise money for the club. After 2010, the club has become increasingly attractive to new Berlin and foreign players, precisely because of the club atmosphere here.
