The club, based in the Athens suburb of Nea Filadelfeia, is known to fans as Kitrinómavri ("yellow and black") or Dikéfalos Aetós ("two-headed eagles"). AEK Athens dates back to 1924 and plays at the Athens Olympic Stadium - capacity is 69,618 spectators. They are two-time winners of the 1997 and 1998 Cup Winners' Cup and are also the only Greek side to reach the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup, in the 1976/1977 season.
From 2020, AEK will play its home games at the Agia Sophia stadium with a capacity of just over 30,000. Twelve times winner of the Greek top competition, fifteen national cup titles, the quarter-finals of the PMEZ in 1969 are other great club achievements. Famous stars? Kleanthis Maropoulos or Stelios Manolas, who spent their careers in a single team - cannonballers like Kostas Nestoridis or Vadilis Dimitriadis, then there's Mimis Papaioannou, the record holder with 234 goals. More recent football history includes Thodoris Zagorakis and Traianos Dellas.
