The full name of this famous team is Amsterdamsche Football Club Ajax, but all football fans know it more as Ajax Amsterdam, or just Ajax. Historically, it is the most successful Dutch club, which has made a very bold mark on the international scene. It was one of the few teams to win all major European competitions. This means that they have managed to dominate in the Champions League (formerly PMEZ), the Cup Winners' Cup or the UEFA Cup.
But it is true that the great international successes are of an older date. And so fans have to be content with dominating the domestic scene first and foremost. What remains, however, is the ability to discover talented players when Ajax run a number of academies and programmes for young footballers beyond the borders of the Netherlands.
The great successes mean that many first-class footballers have also donned the Ajax jersey. The biggest legend in this respect was certainly Johan Cruyff, whose name also carries the current stadium. Other big names include Zlatan Ibrahimović, Luis Suárez, Wesley Sneijder, Edwin van der Sar, Dennis Bergkamp, Frank de Boer and Frank Rijkaard.
