The Akrites, or "Borderers", is the name of the team that was formed in the eastern Greek town of Xanthi in 1967. AO Xanthi or Xanthi F.C. plays its home matches at the Xanthi FC Arena with a capacity of 7,244 spectators (on the occasion of its opening in 2005 we could see the legendary Pelé), first looked at the first league in 1989 and several times played in the Europa League or UEFA Cup, where, however, did not go past the first round - in 2002 it was stopped by Lazio, three years later by England's Middlesbrough.
The club logo features the ancient philosopher Democritus, while the original team in Xanthi - Aspida - was founded in 1922 and is the direct predecessor of AO. Left-back Dimos Baxevanidis has been the captain for many years.
