Arles-Avignon, formally known as Athlétic Club Arles-Avignon, was a French football club based in the city of Arles. However, the team is no longer active in professional football as it faced administrative relegation and financial struggles.
At its peak, Arles-Avignon's most notable achievement was reaching Ligue 1, the top tier of French football, for the 2010-2011 season after a meteoric rise through the lower divisions. This ascent included consecutive promotions from Championnat National (third division) to Ligue 2 and ultimately to Ligue 1 within a few years.
Unfortunately, the club's time in Ligue 1 was short-lived. They struggled to compete against the more established teams and were relegated back to Ligue 2 after just one season. Following their relegation, the club experienced financial difficulties and was administratively relegated to the amateur divisions.
In 2016, the club faced further complications and liquidation, which effectively ended its existence as a professional team. The legacy of Arles-Avignon remains as a lesson on the volatility of football clubs' fortunes and the challenges smaller clubs can face at the highest levels of the sport.
