The club is called Les Verts (the greens) or simply Sainté for short. It's probably not hard to guess that the club's colour is green, which can be found both in the emblem and on the jerseys. This is complemented by white shorts and other white details on the home jerseys. For the away jerseys, the club has done a simple colour swap, with the shorts being green and the jersey white with green details. The home shrine is the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard with a capacity of 41,965 seats.
The club plays the Rhône-Alpes Derby, which brings the long-standing rivalry with Olympique Lyon to the pitch. The derby is also sometimes called the Derby Rhônealpin or simply Le Derby. The name of the rivalry game, of course, refers to the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region from which both clubs originate.
The full name of the club is Association Sportive de Saint-Étienne Loire, also known as A.S.S.E. and was founded in 1919. It is based in the town of Saint-Étienne in the French Midlands, 60 kilometres southwest of rival Lyon.
The club is historically the most successful club in Ligue 1 alongside Olympique de Marseille, having won it a total of 10 times, in 1957, 1964, 1967, 1968, 1969, 1970, 1974, 1975, 1976 and 1981. It is thus evident that the club's strong period was particularly from the 1950s to the early 1980s.
During these years, the club also triumphed 6 times in the French Cup, the last time in the 1976/77 season, and also won the French Super Cup 5 times during this golden club period. On European soil, it reached the final of the European Champions Cup (now the Champions League) in the 1975/76 season.
Despite all this, the club has some more recent successes. For example, it won the French Cup in 2012/13, so relatively recently. However, it has also been relegated to Ligue 2 repeatedly in its modern history. The last time it was relegated was in 2004, and so far it has rather improved its performance in the top flight. He has regularly finished in the top half of the league table.
