The club's nicknames are Rojiblancos (Red and White) and Los Leones (The Lions). The club colours are of course red and white, which dominate both the home jersey and the emblem. Their home is the San Mamés stadium, a modern sanctuary built in 2013 that holds 53,289 people. It replaced the original stadium of the same name on the same site.
This traditional Spanish club's main rivals are Real Sociedad, with whom the Basque derby is played. There is also a rivalry with Real Madrid, which has not only sporting but also political overtones. These matches are then called El Viejo Clásico or El Otro Clásico.
The club was founded in 1898, in Bilbao, the largest city in the Basque Country. The team has a rather interesting home-grown player policy. It features players who are originally from the Basque region, so in recent years it is sufficient if at least one of their parents is.

The first time was in the 1929/30 season, and the last time was the season in which it won the aforementioned treble, 1983/84. He also won the aforementioned Supercopa de España for the first time, and has won it twice overall. The second win was more recently, in 2015. He then won the Copa del Rey a total of 24 times, the first time in 1902 and the last time was in 1984.
