The club's nickname is Cheeseheads, and the club colours are red and white. These colours are represented both in the club crest and on the home jerseys, with the jersey itself being red and the shorts being white. The club is at home at the AFAS Stadium, which will offer a capacity for 17,023 spectators. The Dutch club was founded in 1967 after the merger of two clubs in the city of Alkmaar.

The club's current home in the Dutch league is its highest level, the Eredivisie. After the 2019/20 season, they are ranked 2nd in the premier league table. Meanwhile, the club have become Premier League champions twice in their history, in the 1980/81 and 2008/09 seasons. 1981 also marked their participation in the UEFA Cup, where they reached the final. The club has also triumphed in the Dutch Football Cup 4 times, in 1977/78, 1980/81, 1981/82 and 2012/13. Interestingly, the club is financially supported mainly by the fans and has no major sponsor behind it.
