The nickname of the club is Die Werkself. The club colours are red and black. Home matches are played at the BayArena stadium, which holds 30,210 spectators per league, while a capacity of 29,412 seats is used for international matches. The club has been based here since 1958.
The local rivalry is with FC Köln. While many other clubs have close ties to their working class roots, often associated with a hard core of fans, Bayer 04 Leverkusen strives for a friendly image where families can come to watch football without fear. The local football stadium has this reputation. Ironically, the club's fans were the first fans in the Bundesliga to identify themselves as so-called Ultras and Leverkusen is actually an old industrial city.
Bayer 04 Leverkusen was seen by many as an "artificial club" with no traditions and no dedicated fans. And it was as a result of this that it began to claim the city's industrial heritage. Hence their aforementioned nickname Werkself or "Factory team".
The club was founded in 1904, in Leverkusen in the Federal Republic of North Rhine-Westphalia. At that time it was under the name TuS Bayer 04 Leverkusen. This has changed many times throughout history and the club has been operating under its current name since 1999. It takes its name from the pharmaceutical company Bayer, whose employees founded the club.
Bayer 04 Leverkusen as a whole is actually a sports club, as its members are also involved in basketball, athletics or gymnastics. It was in 1999, when the name was last changed, that the football team was separated from the rest of the sports club.
The club first appeared in the Bundesliga in the 1979/80 season and has been in the league ever since. Thus, despite playing it for many seasons, it has not yet won the title. However, it has been runner-up 5 times, most recently in the 2010/11 season.
The club does however have some cup triumphs, having won the DFB-Pokal in the 1992/93 season. On the international stage, it then won the Cup, now the UEFA Europa League, in the 1987/88 season. It is also certainly worth mentioning that he reached the final of the UEFA Champions League in the 2001/02 season.
