FC Anzhi Makhachkala is a professional football club based in Makhachkala, Dagestan, Russia. Founded in 1991, the team has had a tumultuous history with varied success over the years. Playing their home games at the Anzhi-Arena, which has a seating capacity of around 26,000, Anzhi has garnered a dedicated local fanbase.
The club rose to prominence in the early 2010s when billionaire Suleyman Kerimov purchased it and invested heavily in high-profile signings, bringing in stars like Samuel Eto'o, Willian, and Roberto Carlos. This period marked the zenith of Anzhi's performance, challenging for top honors domestically and competing in European tournaments such as the UEFA Europa League.
However, the substantial financial backing was short-lived. By 2013, due to financial challenges and Kerimov's reduced investment, FC Anzhi Makhachkala was forced into selling many of its stars and drastically cutting its budget. This led to a rapid decline in their fortunes, and consequently, Anzhi has had to endure relegation from the top tier of Russian football.
