The German football club, nicknamed Veilchen, which means violets, naturally has purple as its club colour. The colour is both in the emblem and on the jerseys. At home they play mostly in purple, away they play mostly in white. The home ground of this team is the Erzgebirgsstadion with a capacity of 16,486 people. The club was founded in 1946 as SG Aue in the town of Aue-Bad Schlema in the Federal Republic of Saxony. Since then it has changed its name many times, first in 1948 to BSG Pneumatik Aue and during the GDR era it was also called SC Wismut Karl-Marx-Stadt. It has been under its current name since 1993.
The club currently plays in the 2. Bundesliga, the second highest domestic competition in Germany, and has done so for most of its modern history. It also previously played in the East German top competition, the DDR-Oberliga, which of course no longer exists, and won three championships there in 1956, 1957 and 1959. In 1955, they were runner-up.
