The national colours of the Republic of Mali are displayed in a colourful jersey. The national football team's players represent their country at the World Cup or the Africa Cup of Nations. They are nicknamed the Eagles and fall under the local football association, which was founded in 1960 and then admitted to FIFA two years later. Mali is a poor African country where political instability caused them to only attempt to qualify for the World Cup in 2002. Qualification has not yet been achieved.
Mali has had greater success in the continental Africa Cup of Nations, where they even finished 2nd in 1972. Then in 2012 and 2013 they finished 3rd twice in a row. Also worth mentioning is the Amílcar Cabral Cup, which they have won 3 times and is a competition of West African countries. Mali's best footballer is considered to be Salif Keïta Traoré, who was even named the best footballer in Africa in 1970. He is also in charge of a centre for the education of football talent in Bamako.
