They are called Les Aiglons (the eagles) or Le Gym. They have an eagle in their emblem and the second nickname is an abbreviation, which you will understand when we give the full official name of the club. It is Olympique Gymnaste Club Nice Côte d'Azur. The club colours are red, black and white. At home they play in jerseys with vertical red and black stripes and white shorts.
They have rivalries with Cannes, Olympique Marseille, but mainly with Club Monaco, with whom they play the Derby de la Côte d'Azur (derby of the French Riviera). Both clubs are the main ones in the area of the Côte d'Azur known as the French Riviera.
The club was founded in 1904 in the city of Nice, located in the south of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, between Cannes and Monaco. At that time, it was called the Gymnaste Club de Nice. In 1919, it merged with the Gallia Football Athlétic Club. It has borne its current name since 1924, inspired by the Paris Olympics. The club is one of the founding members of the top professional league in France, now known as Ligue 1.
By far the club's most successful period was the 1950s, when it won four league titles, in 1951, 1952, 1956 and 1959. It was also then that they triumphed twice in the French Cup, in 1952 and 1954. Nice won their last Cup title in 1997.
In Ligue 1, the club has been in the top half of the table in recent years. A number of interesting names have passed through the club in the past, including Colombian footballer David Ospina.
The club originally played at the Stade Municipal du Ray, but a new stadium has been built. Their home stadium is now the Allianz Riviera, which in UEFA and FIFA matches is called the Stade de Nice, due to regulations regarding sponsorship. It is a modern stadium opened in 2013 and has a capacity of 36,178 people for football matches. In addition, rugby matches are played here and concerts are also held here.
