Olympique Lyonnais

The full official name of this successful French club is Olympique Lyonnais, but the abbreviated name is commonly used. They are nicknamed Les Gones (the children). The club colours are red, blue and white. They play at home at the Parc Olympique Lyonnais stadium, which is called Groupama Stadium for sponsorship reasons. In some matches, one can also see the designations Stade de Lyon or Grand Stade de Lyon. It is a modern stadium opened in 2016 and has a capacity of 59,186 people.

The club plays two major derbies. One is the Rhône-Alpes Derby, where it is a healthy rivalry with Saint-Étienne. The other is then the Choc des Olympiques, which is a derby played between clubs that have "Olympique" in their name. The rival in this case is therefore Olympique Marseille.

Milestones and club achievements

Historically, the club originated in 1899 as Lyon Olympique Universitaire. However, it was re-established in its current form in 1950. It was founded in the city of Lyon in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. It plays Ligue 1 and holds a record of seven consecutive titles so far. It won them between 2002 and 2008. Outside of this golden era, however, he hasn't managed any further success in the top flight. Nevertheless, this is a club that regularly plays very high in the league table, finishing second most recently in the 2014/15 and 2015/16 seasons.

In domestic cups, the club has also won the French Cup 5 times, most recently in the 2011/12 season, and one win in the 2000/01 season in the French Football Cup. In European competitions, it won the Intertoto Cup in 1997.
