SC Freiburg

Due to their attractive style of play, they were called Breisgau-Brasilianer, i.e. Breisgau Brazilians, in the early 1990s. This was at the time of their first entry into the Bundesliga. The club colours are red and black. Their local rivalry is with VfB Stuttgart.

Their home is the Schwarzwald-Stadion, which bears that name for sponsorship reasons. For league matches, the shrine holds 24,000 spectators. For many years it was known as the Dreisamstadion, after the nearby Dreisam River. The club is building a new stadium, which is set for completion in the summer of 2020 and will have a capacity of 34,700 people.

Historical background and milestones

The club was founded in 1904, then as Freiburger FV 04. It operates in the Baden-Württemberg city of Freiburg im Breisgau. In the early years of its formation it was renamed twice and merged with another club. In 1945, at the end of the Second World War, it ceased to exist, but the same year it was re-established under the name VfL Freiburg. It has had its current name since 1952.

As mentioned in the introduction, the club did not break into the Bundesliga for the first time until the early 1990s, specifically in the 1993/94 season. Since then, however, it has also returned to the second highest competition several times. It has been writing its last participation in the Bundesliga since the 2016/17 season. However, he does not have a top league title yet.

The club's most successful stint can be described as its participation in the UEFA Cup in the 1995/96 and 2001/02 seasons, and later in the UEFA Europa League in the 2013/14 and 2017/18 seasons. However, it has not won on European soil either.

A very famous player and coach Joachim Löw, used to play here. He scored 81 goals during his time at the club, making him the club's most successful goal scorer to date.
