The full name of the club is Stade Malherbe Caen, also called SMC for short. Their club colours are blue and red. Their home stadium is the Stade Michel d'Ornano, which has a total capacity of 20,453 seats. It is named after a local former politician.
Their main local rivalry is with Le Havre AC, whose matches against each other are sometimes referred to as Le dermy normand, whose name of course refers to the region where both clubs operate, Normandy.
The club, from the city of Caen in Normandy in north-western France, was founded in 1913 by the merger of two other clubs, Club Malherbe Caennais and Club Sportif Caennais. The club took its name from a 17th century poet named François de Malherbe. For most of its history, the club was active in amateur football, in fact it was one of the main clubs in this respect. It was only in 1985 that it became a professional club, and three years later it was promoted to Ligue 1 for the first time.
In 1992, the club managed to finish the season in 5th place in Ligue 1 (their best finish to date) and qualified for the UEFA Cup, now the Europa League. Three years later, however, they were relegated again to the 2nd division.
Success came again after 2002 under new management in the form of Jean-François Fortin and sporting directors Patrick Rémy, Franck Dumas and Patrice Garande. That's when the club made it back to Ligue 1 on several occasions. There were some impressive successes, with the club reaching the final of the Coupe de la Ligue in 2005 and finishing 7th in Ligue 1 a year later.
After the club began its fifth consecutive season in the top flight, conflict erupted in its management, with some leaving, some of the names behind the successes leaving and others being replaced. The consequence of this was relegation to Ligue 2 in 2019, with the club finishing only 19th in the top flight the previous season.
