St. Johnstone FC

They're called The Saints and they play at McDiarmid Park. The stadium has a capacity of 10,696 seats, and in addition to St. Johnstone home games, has also hosted the Scottish Challenge Cup Final 9 times. The Tayside region where the club operates is also home to Dundee and Dundee United, with whom they therefore have the biggest local rivalry. The matches between St. Johnstone and both clubs are then called the Tayside Derby. The club colours are blue and white.

The origins of the club

The club was founded in 1884 in the city of Perth. The name of the club itself comes from St. John's Toun, which was the old name of the city of Perth. The club did not play its first match until a year after its formation. It has only played at the current McDiarmid Park stadium since 1989, until then it played at the now defunct Muirton Park stadium. The club first participated in the Scottish Cup in the 1886/87 season, joining the Scottish Football League during the 1911/12 season.

Milestones and club achievements

The 2008/09 season was the last time they won the First Division, so they moved up to the top flight, then still under the name Scottish Premier League (then Scottish Premiership from 2013). It has remained in the top flight ever since, but in the past has been known for its constant moves between the First Division and the top flight, earning it the nickname "the yo-yo club".

After all, it has won the first division a total of 7 times, which is also the number of times it has been relegated and returned to the top competition. In addition to winning the first division, he has also had some other successes. These include winning the:

    • Scottish Cup - 2013/14 season
    • Scottish Challenge Cup - 2007/08 season

The most recent major achievement is therefore winning the Scottish Cup, which the club achieved by defeating their opponents Aberdeen 2-1. The match was played at Ibrox Stadium. St. Johnstone reached the final after their traditional derby against Dundee United, whom they beat 2-0 at Celtic Park.
