They are nicknamed Les Rouges et Noirs (the red and black ones). Red and black are also their typical club colours. At home they play at Roazhon Park stadium, which has a seating capacity of 29,778 after a 2004 renovation and expansion. When Rennes played Arsenal in the Europa League semi-final on 7 March, a record attendance of 30,519 people was set.
The traditional rivalry here is with another strong Breton club, Nantes. They play the so-called Derby de la Bretagne. Other local clubs such as FC Lorient, EA Guingamp and Stade Brestois are also rivals.
The club was founded in 1901 in Rennes, which is one of the most famous cities in Brittany in northwestern France. The club's name at the time was Stade Rennais. It is one of the founding members of the first division of French professional football.
The club has managed to win the French Cup 3 times during its existence, in 1965, 1971 and most recently in 2019. After winning in 1971, the name was also changed to the current one.
In recent years, the club's performances have been on an upward trend, as evidenced not only by winning the French Cup, but also by its last few final appearances in this cup competition, which were also in 2009 or 2014. It was also a finalist in the French Cup in 2013.
The club is known for its excellent youth academy, known as the Henri Guérin Training Centre, which was established in 2000. The Federation of French Football named it the best youth academy in the country in 2010. The academy has produced several promising talents such as Sylvain Wiltord, Yoann Gourcuff, Yann M'Vila, Moussa Sow, Yacine Brahimi, Abdoulaye Doucouré, Ousmane Dembélé, Jimmy Briand and others.
