VfL Wolfsburg

What do they call them? Die Wölfe, the wolves. The club colours are green and white. For home games they use the Volkswagen Arena, which has a capacity of 30,000 seats for league matches. For matches under the UEFA banner, the name VfL Wolfsburg Arena is then used so as not to indicate the sponsor in the name, which UEFA forbids. It is a modern arena, opened in 2002.

A new team in a new city

The city of Wolfsburg in Lower Saxony was founded in 1938 as a home for workers employed in the local car factories. It was here that the famous Volkswagen Beetle first rolled off the production line. First, a football club was founded here for the car factory workers under the name BSG Volkswagenwerk Stadt des KdF-Wagen. The current sports club was founded in 1945 and, in addition to football, also plays a number of other sports such as handball, basketball and badminton.

However, it is of course best known for its football section. Professional football here is run by an organisation called VfL Wolfsburg-Fußball GmbH, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group.

Club achievements

The club made its first breakthrough into the Bundesliga in the 1997/98 season and has remained in the league to this day. It won its first and only league title in the 2008/09 season. In addition, it finished second overall in the 2014/15 season. He also has a DFB-Pokal Cup win from that season. He also won the DFL-Supercup in 2015. The club's recent success is undeniably helped by the generous financial support of Volkswagen, which allows it to acquire interesting players.
