The usual nicknames of this club are The Irons, The Hammers or The Academy of Football. The club colours are purple and sky blue. The anthem is a song called "I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles", and has been since the 1920s. Their home since 2016 has been the London Stadium with a capacity of 60,000 seats. This capacity is usually used for sporting matches, but for concerts, for example, the capacity can be much higher. It was formerly known as the Olympic Stadium.

In terms of the fan base, there are a number of incidents associated with hard core local hooligans. It dates back to the 1960s and is known to have had numerous clashes with fans of other clubs or with the police. In 2005, an independent film was even made on the subject of West Ham-related football violence. The film featured guest appearances by Elijah Wood and Charlie Hunnam.

The club is from the London borough of Stratford, so its rivalry there is mainly with other London clubs, especially Tottenham Hotspur known as the East vs. North London derby. Then of course with Chelsea, in the East vs. West London derby.

The background to the formation of the club

The club has been in existence since 1895, when it was founded under the then name of Thames Ironworks FC. The club was founded by a group of employees of the Thames Ironworks and Shipbuilding Company. The name was thus chosen after the largest and last surviving company that built ships on the Thames. The club has borne its current name since 1900.

Milestones and club achievements

The club was promoted to the top flight for the first time in the 1923/24 season. It eventually managed to win the competition 3 times, in 1964, 1975 and 1980. In terms of European competitions, it also won the Cup Winners' Cup in 1965. In 1999, he has an Intertoto Cup victory.

The club made it to the current Premier League for the first time in the 1993/94 season. The last time it did so was in the 2012/13 season and it remains in the top flight to this day. Its best finish in the Premier League is 3rd place in the 1985/86 season.
