Wolverhampton Wanderers Football Club has been around for over 140 years, dating back to 1877. Back then it was still called St Luke's F.C., but that didn't last very long and the change to the current version occurred in 1879. Among football fans, the club is also known by the nickname Wolves, the use of which is certainly more convenient than the much longer official team name.
Since the end of the 19th century, they have been playing their home games at the Molineux Stadium, whose current capacity is over 30,000 spectators. In 1888, Wolverhampton Wanderers were among the founders of the English Football League (EFL) and therefore the top competition in English football, which was number one until 1992 when the top teams separated to form the Premier League. Today, the EFL is the oldest football league in the world.
Over the course of its long history, there have of course been many successes. Wolves have even become champions of the top competition. But that success is quite old, having happened three times in the 1950s. Over the years, they have also managed to win several times in the lower competitions. In addition to that, they were able to enjoy winning the FA Cup four times and in the same number they were able to win another prized FA Charity Shield trophy.
There is also an interesting fact attached to Wolverhampton Wanderers which is now commonplace. In 1953, the team had artificial lighting installed in their stadium. This made them one of the pioneers in England, as they were one of the first teams to invest in this area.
