The Hamburger SV football team has already celebrated a century of existence, having been founded in 1919. The Hamburg club played in the first league throughout its existence until 2018, when they were relegated to the second highest competition. Until their relegation, they were the only team to have played in the first league continuously since their foundation. The club was founded in 1946 as SG Aue in the town of Aue-Bad Schlema in the Federal Republic of Saxony. Since then it has changed its name many times, first in 1948 to BSG Pneumatik Aue and during the GDR era it was also called SC Wismut Karl-Marx-Stadt. It has been under its current name since 1993.
