The football club from the famous Sicilian city was founded in 1900 and today Palermo SSD can be considered the most successful football team from this island. Their home stadium, Stadio Renzo Barbera, boasts a capacity of over 36,000 spectators.

From the original Empoli FBC it gradually became ASF Empoli, Dopolavoro Empolese to today's Empoli FC. However, the vast majority of their time was spent in Italy's third highest competition.
