The club, based in the Athens suburb of Nea Filadelfeia, is known to fans as Kitrinómavri ("yellow and black") or Dikéfalos Aetós ("two-headed eagles"). AEK Athens dates back to 1924 and plays at the Athens Olympic Stadium - capacity is 69,618 spectators. They are two-time winners of the 1997 and 1998 Cup Winners' Cup and are also the only Greek side to reach the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup, in the 1976/1977 season.

The home stadium is the Serres Municipal Stadium, which offers a capacity of 9 500 spectators. The club was founded in the Greek town of Serres in central Macedonia in 1963.
