Soccer is also gaining popularity in the USA and Canada, and this is mainly due to the increasingly high-quality Major League Soccer. The first season was played in 1996 with ten teams. The number of competing teams is continually being increased, with 26 playing in 2020 and plans to expand to 30 teams in the near future, and even that may not be the final number.
The quality and popularity of MLS is partly helped by the fact that several world-famous players have tried it out in recent years. The first really big name that America has attracted is David Beckham. The legendary Englishman played for the LA Galaxy and subsequently became co-owner and president of Inter Miami CF. Another player who has drawn a lot of media attention to MLS is Zlatan Ibrahimovic and there are other names to be found.
One of the best teams in the league is the Los Angeles Galaxy with five titles in 2002, 2005, 2011, 2012 and 2014. D.C. is one triumph behind. San Jose Earthquakes, Sporting Kansas City, Seattle Sounders FC and Houston Dynamo have two championships each. There are also a few teams that could have rejoiced at least once.
