The club's nicknames include Los Colchoneros, Los Indios and Los Rojiblancos (the red and white). Surely you can guess the club colours, red and white. It won't be hard to guess that the club's biggest rival is undoubtedly its neighbour Real Madrid. The local Madrid derby is played with it. Although Real are the more successful team overall, these are always very prestigious matches.

Milestones and club successes

The club was founded in Madrid, the capital of Spain, in 1903 by three local students. The founders considered the club to be the younger brother of their favourite childhood club, Athletic Bilbao.

Atlético is historically the third most successful club in the Spanish league. It has won a total of 10 league titles. The first one was won in 1940 and the last one in 2014. It has also recently finished second in the 2017/18 and 2018/19 seasons. In general, it has always played very high in the table in recent years.

The club has also scored points in cups, winning the Supercopa de España twice, in 1985 and 2014. The year before the last victory, it was also in the final. It has won the Copa del Rey 10 times, the last time being in 2012/13.

The club is no stranger to European soil either, having celebrated success in the Cup Winners' Cup in 1961/62, the Intercontinental Cup in 1974 and the UEFA Europa League in the 2009/10, 2011/12 and 2017/18 seasons. They has also reached the final of the prestigious Champions League on three occasions, most recently relatively recently in the 2013/14 and 2015/16 seasons.
