The history of the Champions League dates back to 1955, but it was still called the European Champions Cup. The change to the current name occurred in 1992. What has remained the same, however, is the essence of the competition, which pits the best teams from European competitions against each other. The winner of the Champions League still has to play for the European Super Cup, in which they will meet the winner of the slightly less prestigious Europa League.
It's probably no great surprise that the most successful teams in history include representatives of English, Italian and Spanish football. And it's all led by arguably the most famous football team in the world, Real Madrid. The White Ballet has so far managed to win the Champions League thirteen times. And it's lost three times in the final.
Very well-known names are, of course, also at the top of the player statistics. Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi reign supreme among the scorers. It is the famous goalkeeper Iker Casillas who has the most appearances in matches, with a small lead over Ronaldo, who could soon take the top spot in this indicator as well.
